On Nov. 9, 2012 — 11 days after Hurricane Sandy made landfall — approximately 3,700 Long Island Power Authority customers in East Meadow were still without power. It wasn’t until a few days later that LIPA trucks finally arrived, restoring power to thousands of families who endured up to two weeks without electricity.

The motto of Francis X. Hegarty Elementary School in Island Park is “Together we are better.” In East Meadow, Barnum Woods Elementary School’s motto is “We use our head, heart and hands in all we do.”
Last Friday, the two schools backed up those words at a ceremony in the central courtyard of Barnum Woods, where school officials donated $18,500 to the Hegarty School, which was devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

Like no other storm since the “Long Island Express” of 1938, Hurricane Sandy ripped apart Long Island’s South Shore, lifting docks off their moorings and depositing them miles away, tearing hot tubs from backyard decks and dumping them in the canals that line the coast, and sending boats big and small hurtling out to sea.

Carrying a notebook and pen, East Meadow resident Michael Gordon has spent the past month walking door-to-door to the homes of Hurricane Sandy victims, jotting down the supplies that they need. After doing so, he makes them a promise — “I guarantee the next day I will be back to bring you your stuff,” he said.
