Compared with most New York state school districts, the Elmont Union Free district’s spending plan for 2012-13, unveiled by the Board of Education on April 17, represents higher stakes for the community’s schools. The district is one of only three in Nassau County — along with Floral Park-Bellerose and Island Park — to exceed its allowable tax levy increase for next year’s budget.

The Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education voted unanimously on March 27 to approve the district’s 2012-13 of $167.03 million — a 2.94 percent increase over its current budget, $163.97 million.

The Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education held its first 2012-13 budget workshop in February, unveiling three spending scenarios and stressing that the budget would likely exceed the 2 percent tax levy cap in order to avoid more than $3 million in cuts. Since that time, the board was notified that it would receive an unanticipated, additional $1 million in state and special education aid from prior school years, bringing the projected the tax levy increase for 2012-13 down, from 4.64 percent to roughly 4 percent.

Gov. Cuomo is the state’s top executive, elected by the people, so who’s supporting his plans? It’s the state’s public workers unions and the teachers’ union — they are suing the governor in court.
