The Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education held its first 2012-13 budget workshop in February, unveiling three spending scenarios and stressing that the budget would likely exceed the 2 percent tax levy cap in order to avoid more than $3 million in cuts. Since that time, the board was notified that it would receive an unanticipated, additional $1 million in state and special education aid from prior school years, bringing the projected the tax levy increase for 2012-13 down, from 4.64 percent to roughly 4 percent.

H. Frank Carey High School was crowned the winner of Sewanhaka Central High School District’s annual District Sports Night on Feb. 29, held at Carey. Students in grades 7-12 from Carey, as well as Elmont Memorial, Sewanhaka, Floral Park Memorial and New Hyde Park Memorial high schools competed in various games, including Tug-of-War and relay races.

Paul Sapienza took over Sapienza Bake Shop, on Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont, from his parents, Andrew and Angelina Sapienza, in May 1973. He’d just finished an undergraduate program in accounting, and decided he wanted to give retail management a try. It was lucky for him, because had he not been behind the store’s counter on one fateful day in 1975, he might have missed re-connecting with the love of his life, Roseanne, his wife of 37 years.
