With holiday time upon us, many people have giving on their minds. We enjoy the tradition of giving gifts to our loved ones, but also at this time of year, it’s important to think of those who have little, who may get no gifts at all.

I am so not in the mood for an emerald necklace this year. I thought I’d get that out of the way first. In this post-recession interlude, I’m thinking more along the lines of the best things in life are free or at least quite reasonable.

My, how the holiday season crept up on us this year! One minute, it seemed, we were basking in the summer sun, and the next, Thanksgiving appeared out of nowhere. On Friday, after downing turkey, playing touch football and remembering all that we’re thankful for, many will be out and about, shopping for the December holidays.
