The Town of Hempstead recognized 24 local firefighters on Oct. 20 at the Annual Firematic Awards, held at the Nathan L.H. Bennett Pavilion at the Town Hall in Hempstead. Among those recipients was Vincent Focazio Sr., representing the Elmont Fire Department.

Focazio has been a member of the Elmont F.D. for 53 years, holding various ranks within Engine Company No. 3.
“Day and night, firefighters and EMTs are ready and willing to answer the call,” said Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray, at the event. “Their bravery and volunteerism help make our communities safe and pleasant places to call home.”

Focazio was recognized for decades of service, as well as for leading the department’s Rehab Unit, which provides firefighters with an area for rest and relief from extreme temperatures and other extreme conditions, for nearly 10 years.

“Vincent’s work ethic and dedication were obviously passed along to his three sons, each of whom has served as a past captain of Engine 3,” Murray said, adding that Focazio’s wife of 48 years, Catherine, is a longtime member of the Elmont department’s Ladies Auxiliary.

“Volunteer firefighters are indeed heroes in our communities, and the Town of Hempstead is extremely grateful to each and every member of the local fire departments,” Murray said. “It’s a pleasure to have this opportunity to recognize Hempstead Town’s bravest.”
