Students from Clara H. Carlson School celebrated Black History Month on Feb. 12 through a variety of class-level projects and presentations that spanned throughout the entire school day.

In Rina DiRe’s class, third-grade students read their class summary of “The Story of Ruby Bridges” by Robert Coles to family members. At six-years-old, Bridges was the first African American child to integrate a New Orleans school. The children also shared letters they wrote to Bridges commending her bravery and strength.

Meanwhile, fifth-grade students from Kristin Biggin’s class delivered oral presentations on people mentioned in the book “Heart and Soul: The Story of Americans and African Americans” by Kadir Nelson. The students selected and researched a hero from the book, which highlighted those who contributed to the culture and history of the country.

Kindergartners also took part, reciting “The Crayon Box that Talked,” a poem that celebrates the creation of harmony through diversity, much to their parents delight.
