Renowned pianist Emanuel Ax will perform a solo recital at Tilles Center on Saturday, May 7, at 8 pm. An audience favorite, Mr. Ax returns to the Tilles Center stage with a program that will include Schubert’s Impromptus Op. 142, D. 935 and Sonata No. 13 in A, Op. posth. 120 (D. 664), along with Chopin’s Barcarolle in F-sharp Major, Op. 60, Three Mazurkas, Nocturnes, Op. 59, Op. 27, and Scherzo No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 31.

Born in Lvov, Poland, Mr. Ax moved to Canada with his family when he was a young boy. His studies at the Juilliard School were supported by the sponsorship of the Epstein Scholarship Program of the Boys Clubs of America, and he subsequently won the Young Concert Artists Award. Mr. Ax captured public attention in 1974 when he won the first Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv. In 1975 he won the Michaels Award of Young Concert Artists followed four years later by the coveted Avery Fisher Prize.

In recent years, Mr. Ax has turned his attention toward the music of 20th-century composers, premiering works by John Adams, Christopher Rouse, Krzysztof Penderecki, Bright Sheng, and Melinda Wagner. Mr. Ax is also devoted to chamber music, and has worked regularly with such artists as Young Uck Kim, Cho-Liang Lin, Mr. Ma, Edgar Meyer, Peter Serkin, Jaime Laredo, and the late Isaac Stern.
