A second man has been indicted in connection with the 2021 acid attack on Nafiah Ikram in Elmont, Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced.

Shaquille Coke, 31, of Brooklyn, the victim’s ex-boyfriend, was arraigned on March 24 before Judge Joy Watson on grand jury indictment charges of two counts of first-degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and unlawfully possessing noxious materials. He pleaded not guilty and was remanded. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison. He is due back in court on April 20.

Coke is accused of acting with co-defendant Terrell Campbell, 29, of Brooklyn, who was arrested Feb. 9 and arraigned Feb. 10 in First District Court in Hempstead on similar charges. Campbell pleaded not guilty and was remanded.

According to prosecutors, on March 17, 2021, at about 8:30 p.m., Ikram, then 21, was returning home to Elmont after finishing a shift at a pharmacy in Baldwin. As she walked from her car toward her front door, Campbell allegedly approached her and threw a liquid substance from a cup onto her face and body.

The substance was later determined to be 70 percent sulfuric acid. Ikram suffered severe burns and permanent vision loss in her right eye, and has undergone multiple surgeries.

Prosecutors said evidence developed over the course of the investigation, including cell phone records, indicates that Coke met with Campbell about an hour before the attack and is believed to have driven the vehicle used.

Donnelly described the attack as “vicious and vindictive,” alleging Coke, a “jealous” and “possessive” former boyfriend, helped plan the assault.
