Imagine kid-sized fitness equipment, such as treadmills, step climbers and stationary bikes, all available in a safe and colorful environment. Add to that age-appropriate exercise classes taught by instructors who are also physical education teachers. This is basically what Gym 4 Kidz is all about.

This unique concept came about when Saundra and Armando Hernandez were looking for a business to start as a husband and wife team. Three years ago, Saundra left a 25-year corporate career to spend more time with their three boys. During that time, she lost weight, got her family to eat healthier, and became focused on the rising obesity issue among today’s youngsters. Both involved with the community’s youth - Saundra as a religion teacher and Armando as a baseball coach - they saw the need for more fitness programs.

Gym 4 Kids is for elementary school children. Classes are one hour, divided into age-based groups: five and six-year-olds, seven through nine, and ten through 12. There are no monthly or annual fees. Classes are purchased in packages of four or eight sessions. During the school year, the schedule starts at 4 p.m. and ends by 8:15 p.m.

Sessions are fun, non-competitive and not intimidating, designed to help each child reach their own optimum fitness. Combined are cardiovascular and strength exercises classes, which are structured and well-supervised. Children love the scaled down equipment.

During the summer, “Fun Fitness Camp” is broken down into morning and afternoon sessions. Gym 4 Kids has partnered up with Bricks 4 Kidz to offer two hours of fitness plus a one-hour Lego session. Rates are by the week, with discounts given for multiple weeks.

Fitness Birthday Parties are another feature. Included are an hour of gym activities and 30 minutes of eating time. Gym 4 Kids provides pizza, children’s beverages, paper goods, invitations and a party T-shirt for the birthday child. You provide the cake.
