The annual fundraiser for the Franklin Square Historical Society at Plattduetsche Park served as both a community celebration and a major moment of recognition for longtime civic contributor Mathew Buck, who was honored as the 2026 Citizen of the Year.
The fundraising dinner last week brought together local elected officials, community leaders, trustees, and residents in support of the Historical Society’s mission to preserve and promote Franklin Square’s heritage.
A key theme throughout the night was appreciation for Matt Buck’s contributions, who is also the restaurant manager for the Plattduetsche. He was described as a steady presence in the community who has helped maintain and modernize the Plattduetsche Park facility while preserving its historic character. He was credited with supporting local organizations—such as youth sports, charitable groups, and civic events—by ensuring they had access to the venue and the resources needed to succeed. His recognition as Citizen of the Year was framed not only as a personal honor but as part of a long tradition of community stewardship.
Elected officials, including Assemblyman Ed Ra and Legislator John Giuffre offered congratulatory remarks and citations, emphasizing the importance of local history and the work of the Franklin Square Historical Society in educating future generations. He was highlighted for the museum’s role in preserving Franklin Square’s identity and his efforts in maintaining the “old-time feel” of the historic property while keeping it functional for modern use.
The event also underscored the importance of fundraising for the museum’s operations. Proceeds from ticket sales, raffles, and donations help cover daily expenses such as utilities, insurance, educational programming, artifact preservation, and restoration work. Additional funds support planned expansions, including a classroom extension project, an initiative to further educate young scholars of Franklin Square’s rich history.
Overall, the fundraiser captured the local history of the Historical Society and its role as a cultural anchor in the community.
