Meera Empowerment Foundation to host free prom giveaway for Long Island students

The Meera Empowerment Foundation is set to host its annual prom giveaway on April 25, providing free formalwear and accessories to students across Long Island and New York City in an effort to make prom more accessible and inclusive.

The event, led by founder Selene Ferdinand, 13, and supported by her mother, Savitre Ferdinand, will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. at Sewanhaka Central High School in Elmont. The giveaway is open to all students, with no cost for any items.

Now in its fifth year, the prom giveaway has steadily expanded, both in size and reach. Last year alone, more than 150 dresses were distributed, along with suits, shoes and accessories. The event has become a key resource for students who may face financial barriers when preparing for prom, which can often cost hundreds of dollars when factoring in attire, grooming and other expenses.

“It really helps the students, especially the ones who might not be able to afford a prom dress or prom shoes or accessories and things like that,” Selene said. “So I feel like it kind of helps those students too, but also students who might just be having trouble finding something.”

In addition to formalwear, last year Meera was able to provide vouchers for services such as haircuts, hairstyling and other grooming needs, helping students fully prepare for the occasion. Selene and her mother believe these added resources can make a meaningful difference for families navigating rising costs.

“Different people donate, we get clothes from families where their children graduated last year and they donate to us,” Savitre said.

Local businesses, including Jim Dandy Cleaners of Elmont, are contributing donations, as well as teachers and staff across the district to help with the initiative.

The foundation has partnered with You’re Our Unity, a community outreach network and media platform focusing on community initiatives. The founder, LeShawn Walker, is also supportive of Meera and has been joining forces with the organization to help with outreach. Walker originally initiated the event and reached out to Meera four years ago to commence their partnership.

This year, the foundation is also incorporating an international component into its efforts by supporting students in Haiti with graduation attire, further extending its mission beyond Long Island.

The prom giveaway is part of the foundation’s broader work focused on youth empowerment, community service and access to resources. In addition to the giveaway, the organization hosts an annual fashion show each summer, which serves as both a fundraiser and a platform for young talent.

Meera Empowerment encourages students to arrive early for the best selection of items. Donations are still being accepted in the days leading up to the event.
