My stomach was churning furiously. The Press Club of Long Island’s first-ever poetry reading on Aug. 23 was to begin in a half-hour at the Huntington Station birthplace of the unparalleled poet and journalist Walt Whitman. Would anyone show? I wondered.

As a follow-up to your article regarding the lighting conditions on Route 878/Nassau Expressway, “Darkness on the edge of Lawrence” (Feb. 1-7), it is important to note that the Village of Lawrence, looking past technicalities and details of jurisdiction, has taken the initiative to restore lighting to this roadway that is so vital to the entire area.

Regarding the proposed legislation of State Sen. Todd Kaminsky (“Battling a symbol of hate,” June 9-15), it would be an unacceptable infringement on freedom of speech and freedom of religion, both being protected by the constitution.
