At the Franklin Square Union Free School District’s Board of Education meeting on April 3, board members approved a 2012-13 budget of $34.43 million — a 1.5 percent increase over the district’s current budget, $33.93 million.

District 13 voters will decide in May on a proposition to expand bus service for all children living at least a half-mile from school. A petition was submitted to the district last month and by law must be placed on the ballot.

The Middle Country School District in Suffolk County faces a $10.3 million budget deficit in 2012-13 because of Governor Cuomo’s vaunted 2 percent property-tax levy cap, so Middle Country is considering eliminating its pre-school program, reducing full-day kindergarten to a half-day and axing sports and after-school clubs for middle and high school students, according to News12.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation on Dec. 12 to reduce the Metropolitan Transportation Authority payroll tax —passed in 2009 to help the failing MTA and was effective in 12 counties served by the authority — relieving more than 290,000 small businesses and 410,000 entrepreneurs by $250 million, beginning April 1.
