Elmont first graders at Alden Terrace School recently concluded their science unit on apples.

They researched the life cycle of an apple and learned about the structure and function of the parts of a plant. The students created diagrams that identified the core, stem, leaf, and skin of apples during the unit. They also learned about how farmers use technology, such as drones, to monitor their crops.

“This unit truly encompassed everything, from science to reading to technology,” said Shawnée Warfield, Alden Terrace School principal.

On Oct. 13, the first graders participated in apple-themed activities to close out the unit. They created apple models using 3D printers, created an apple orchard out of Legos, utilized a green screen to share apple facts and viewed a large apple diagram. Additionally, they learned how a drone works and saw a drone fly back and forth in the building’s STEAM lab. The kids also got to make applesauce in class.
