To celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month and raise awareness, Pastor Ralph P. Taylor and the Women’s Ministry of Emanuel Baptist Church hosted a health and wellness event at Emanuel Baptist Church, 1880 Pelham Street, Elmont, NY 11003, on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event featured a Will, Trust, and Proxy presentation by Maddan Law and Bro. Kyle Davis. It also included speakers and participants such as Katrina Edwards, volunteer coordinator at LiveOnNY; Theresa Hart, a two-time cancer survivor and author of The Enemy in the Inner Me; Kevin Hart, a pediatric clinician, mental health counselor, and minister at New Life Christian Center; Tiffany Garlick, celebrity makeup artist and esthetician, and owner of Toni Roc Beauty in Franklin Square; Nancy Garlick, RN, MSN, and MBA; Phara Ling, RN; Andrew Stephen Gabriel, certified Master Herbalist; Allie of Feteness, Dance Fitness; and John Francois, fascial stretch therapist. Around 47 people attended the presentation.
Gail Holloway, president of the 62 plus VIP, a prominent local senior community organization primarily active in the Elmont and Franklin Square areas of Nassau County, and Julia Colvard-Perry, president of the Women’s Ministry of Emanuel Baptist Church, said the women’s ministry aimed to bring health and wellness information to the community.
The presentations included wills, estates, proxies, and financial matters to help people prepare and communicate their wishes.
“We're just trying to reach out to people, not only in this community,” Holloway said. “...And it's open to those that want to come and get the information. So, it's up to them if they choose not to. We're here doing it.”
Both of them said that cancer diagnoses, heart attacks, and strokes were health concerns in the community that motivated them to host the event. The event was shared online and on other platforms and was open to anyone seeking information.
The organizers hoped attendees would prepare for the future and discuss their wishes with loved ones.
