A Central Islip man was arrested on Nov. 28 in West Hempstead following a traffic stop that led to the discovery of a firearm and ammunition, Nassau County police officials said.
A gray, 2007 Toyota Camry traveling westbound on Hempstead Turnpike near midnight on Nov. 28 with no headlights was observed by police officers. During a traffic stop of the vehicle that took place in the parking lot of 458 Hempstead Turnpike, officers observed a knife in the center cup holder of the vehicle.
After further investigation, a 9mm handgun with no serial number was discovered in the rear seating area of the vehicle, as well as a zip loc bag containing 30 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
The Central Islip man, Iyel Adams Banton, 19, was placed into custody.
Banton was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, criminal possession of a firearm, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and a traffic Infraction. He was arraigned on Nov. 28 at First District Court in Hempstead.
