Laughter, music and the sound of children racing across the grass filled Elmont Road Park this past weekend as hundreds of families gathered for the Elmont Cultural Center’s third annual Easter egg hunt.

Held the day before Easter, the event has quickly grown into a community tradition. This year, organizers welcomed 725 registered participants along with more than 600 additional families who joined throughout the afternoon, transforming the park into a lively celebration of spring.

More than 10,000 brightly colored eggs were spread across the field, creating an exciting scene as children eagerly searched for prizes. Many paused along the way to meet the Easter Bunny and take photos with their families.

“This was more than just an Easter event it was a celebration of community, love, and togetherness,” said Selene Ferdinand, founder and CEO of Meera Empowerment.

The afternoon featured a variety of activities, including face painting, arts and crafts, music and games such as relay races and egg-on-the-spoon competitions. Egg hunts were organized by age group to allow children of all ages to participate.

Organizers also introduced a separate egg hunt designed for neurodivergent children, part of an effort to make the event more inclusive and accessible to all families.

Families traveled from across the region, including Brooklyn, the Bronx, Suffolk County and New Jersey, said Ferdinand, which reflected on the event’s growing popularity

Tamar Bailey of the Elmont Cultural Center shared her hopes for the future of the event, saying she hopes to have a helicopter drop down easter eggs one day.

The event was supported by nearly 40 volunteers, including members of the Key Club at Elmont Memorial High School and Meera Empowerment ambassadors, who helped ensure activities ran smoothly throughout the day.

For many attendees, the event offered more than seasonal entertainment — it provided an opportunity for families and neighbors to come together and celebrate the holiday as a community.
