Models of all ages graced the runway as Meera Empowerment hosted its sixth annual fashion show fundraiser at The Vault in Elmont, showcasing fashion as a platform for youth empowerment while celebrating Caribbean culture and community.

Supporters of Meera gathered at the newly renovated venue on Hempstead Turnpike on July 25 for the nonprofit’s signature fundraising event. The afternoon featured runway presentations, fashion, raffles and community recognition, raising money to support Meera Empowerment’s mission of mentoring young people and building confidence through leadership opportunities.

Founded by teen Selene Ferdinand, Meera Empowerment aims to inspire young people to embrace their individuality while developing leadership skills, confidence and a sense of purpose. The annual fashion show provides youth with an opportunity to showcase their confidence on the runway while highlighting local designers, artists and businesses that support the organization’s mission.

Many of the pieces marked creativity, beauty, and Caribbean culture. Emcee LeShawn Walker, founder of You’re Our Unity, introduced each model as they took the stage, celebrating their confidence while highlighting the designers behind each collection.

Following one of the runway presentations, Walker recognized featured designer Marie Felix for her creativity and craftsmanship.

"She sponsored the lead at the Royal International, specifically the taxicab outfit," Walker said of the pieces Ferdinand competed with for a Royal International title this year. "It was amazing. It was beautiful, and it was crafted so beautifully."

Walker encouraged attendees to connect with Felix for custom designs, praising her ability to bring creative ideas to life through fashion.

Among those attending the event was Nassau County Legislator Carrie Solages, who said the fashion show reflected the spirit of the Elmont community while also highlighting a new gathering place for local events.

"This is truly what our community represents — beautiful and fashionable," Solages said.

Throughout the afternoon, attendees enjoyed music, refreshments and networking while cheering on the models as they walked the runway. More than a fashion show, the event emphasized self-expression, cultural pride and the importance of creating opportunities for young people to grow as leaders.

The celebration concluded with door prize drawings and a recognition ceremony honoring community members whose continued support has helped Meera Empowerment expand its reach. Ferdinand presented awards to several volunteers and supporters, including Lewis.

"She has been supporting Meera Empowerment so much, and we are so grateful for her," Ferdinand said.

Through mentorship, leadership opportunities and events like the fashion show, Meera Empowerment remains committed to helping young people build confidence, discover their talents and make a positive impact in their communities.
