New York racetrack chaplaincy gives Elmont families personalized backpacks

For nearly two decades, the New York Racetrack Chaplaincy has helped local families prepare for the school year through an annual backpack giveaway that provides children with supplies tailored to their individual classroom needs.

The program began at Belmont Park as an effort to support the children of men and women who work in the track’s barn areas. Over the years, it has expanded to include children from surrounding communities, including Elmont and nearby neighborhoods. The initiative is also supported by Thoroughbred Charities of America, which has a nationwide effort to support families working in the barn areas of the racing industry.

Unlike traditional backpack giveaways that provide every child with the same supplies, the chaplaincy asks parents to submit their children’s school supply lists. The organization then prepares each backpack with the specific items requested by the child’s teacher.

Families also had the opportunity to choose the color or style of their child’s backpack. The program, which was held this year on Sept. 14, aims to ease some of the financial pressure families face when preparing for a new school year.

“The backpacks are personalized,” Karen Chavez, director of the New York Racetrack Chaplaincy, said. “We’re trying to eliminate the pressure and the financial pressure of having to buy anything that they may need.”

Each child also receives a new pair of sneakers, made possible through donations from supporters. For families in need of additional assistance, the chaplaincy works with other organizations that can provide new clothing and other school necessities.

One of its main partners is the National Council of Jewish Women, which hosts a larger back-to-school event and helps families obtain clothing, coats and other items.

The backpack giveaway has also grown into a community event, with activities including a bounce house and other giveaways. Local organizations and groups also attend to provide families with information and resources.

The chaplaincy also raises money through an annual fundraiser at the racetrack, where horse owners, trainers and others involved in the racing industry contribute funds that are used to purchase additional supplies.

The New York Racetrack Chaplaincy is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The nonprofit provides social, educational, spiritual and recreational services to people working in the racing industry.

The organization also plans to continue its outreach throughout the year. Its next major initiative will be a Thanksgiving turkey distribution for about 300 families working at the track, as well as seniors in Elmont.
