Coastal high tides, downed trees, and LIRR service suspensions were the result of this weekend's nor’easter, which continues to affect Long Island. Although it did not affect Franklin Square and Elmont on a large scale, residents still experienced heavy rain and strong winds on Sept. 26.
Because of unfavorable weather conditions, all weekend school activities, including homecoming for Sewanhaka High School and Floral Park Memorial High School, have been canceled.
“It is not over," Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said on Sunday. "While the wind is dying down and the rain will just be a trickle compared to what we’ve had the last couple of days, the ground is saturated with water. That means roots are loosened. It doesn’t take much for a tree, especially one full of leaves, to fall over,” he said.
Blakeman said sustained winds of 20 mph are expected today, with gusts that may reach 30 to 40 mph at times. Light to moderate rain is expected to continue through Monday morning.
As of noon Sunday, power has been restored to more than 93,700 PSEG-Long Island customers across Long Island and the Rockaways, utility officials said. As of press time, 18,501 customers are without power.
Blakeman said he believes Nassau County will be “back to close to normal” by tomorrow morning.
According to PSEG Long Island storm updates, as of Saturday, Sept. 26, at 1 p.m., PSEG Long Island had restored power to more than 34,600 customers affected by the storm since Friday at 7 a.m. The storm has downed trees, branches, and wires across its service areas.
Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency on Sept. 25 for both Nassau and Suffolk counties. On Saturday, she issued a strong warning to people going into or near the water, saying it is "literally gambling with their lives."
A State of Emergency was declared on Long Island, as hazardous rip currents and coastal flooding in Nassau County and Suffolk County are expected through the weekend, with beach flooding and erosion also possible.
On Saturday, Legislator Carrié Solages, whose district includes Elmont, expressed concerns on his social media.
