Students in grades three through five at Covert Avenue School recently showcased their knowledge of the past during the school’s annual History Bee.

After emerging as champions in their individual classroom competitions, 14 finalists advanced to the schoolwide bee, where they competed in front of an enthusiastic audience of classmates.

Contestants answered questions spanning centuries of world history. They were asked to identify the volcano that devastated the ancient city during the Eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and to name the iconic interlocking bricks invented in 1934 by Danish toymaker Ole Kirk Christiansen, founder of LEGO.

The opening round featured multiple-choice questions. In the second round, the challenge increased as students were required to provide correct answers without prompts in order to remain in the competition.

The event was organized and judged by library media specialist Jessica Murphy and assisted by ENL teacher Tara Das.

After a close competition, third grader Sabian Suhku claimed the championship title, while fifth grader Elise Verestegui earned second place. Sabian received a trophy, prize bag and a MakerSpace Day, and his class was awarded five Who HQ books for their classroom library.

“Congratulations to all of our competitors for their hard work and outstanding effort!” Principal Alison Gunn said.
