Residents of Valley Stream’s four school districts approved their budgets on Tuesday night, and an incumbent Board of Education trustee in District 13 was defeated.
District 13’s proposed $45.8 million budget, which will raise the tax levy by 2.6 percent, was approved by more than a 2-to-1 margin.
There were two contested seats for the Board of Education. Debra Evans, who has served three terms on the board, lost to Patricia Farrell, the past PTA president of the Wheeler Avenue School. Farrell won by more than 150 votes and carried three of the four elementary schools.
“I want to thank the parents and community for their support and their faith in me,” Farrell said. “I look forward to serving them.”
Frank Chiachiere, who has served for 21 years, easily sailed to victory over fellow Malverne resident Patrick Heaney. Sean Douglas ran unopposed and was the top vote-getter among the candidates.
Voters in District 24 resoundingly passed the budget, 372 to 126. There were no contested elections for school board with incumbents Paul DePace and Lisa Pellicane and newcomer Armando Hernandez taking the three seats.
In District 30, residents responded favorably to a budget proposal that contained no increase to the tax levy. Nearly 80 percent of voters said “yes” to the $33.3 million spending plan, and also approved a pair of propositions to create a capital reserve fund and perform upgrades at Clear Stream Avenue School. Trustee Carolyn Torres, running unopposed, was re-elected.
The passage of the Central High School District’s $108 million budget by a nearly 1,000-vote margin means that some teaching positions and electives can be restored.
