Freeport High School’s annual homecoming festivities was largely an overwhelming success for the community. The day was highlighted by a 33-0 win by the school’s boys’ varsity football team over the Hicksville Comets.
On Oct. 3, Freeport families, students and local leaders gathered at Freeport High School for its Homecoming Parade and football game. Leading this year's homecoming court were high school seniors Jeremy Henderson and Allison Dubon who were chosen to serve as homecoming king and queen. The parade began at noon, featuring members of the high school’s marching band, cheerleaders, Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps and other community members.
Following that fanfare, the kindergarteners from the Freeport school district had a brief meet up on the school’s football field with the high school seniors, a coming together of Freeport Public Schools’ youngest and oldest students.
Prior to the football game at 2 p.m., Freeport leaders held the honorary ribbon cutting ceremony. Freeport Public Schools’ Board of Education President Michael Pomerico, Vice President Gabriela Castillo and Trustee Edward Gordon were joined by Superintendent Fia Davis, Nassau County Legislator Debra Mulé, State Senator Siela Bynoe and Assemblymembers Noah Burroughs and Judy Griffin.
On the field, the Freeport Red Devils won confidently, led by head coach Jimmy Jones who returned to the team this year after a year-long absence. Their dominant shut out win improves their record to 4-1 on the season, and dropped the Comets to 1-3.
The Red Devils leads Section 8 Conference I in wins, with its sole loss coming in their opening game of the season against conference opponent Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School on Sept. 4.
Coach Jones and company will hope to extend their four game winning streak against three more conference opponents this month. The Red Devils play go on the road to play the Farmingdale Dalers on Oct. 9, and will play their final two games of the month at home against Syosset High School on Oct. 23 and the Uniondale Knights on Oct. 31.
