Among the 25 awards that the United States Tennis Association handed out Association at its 36th Annual Long Island Region awards dinner, one went to Herald Community Media’s sports editor Tony Bellissimo.
With the help of an outstanding staff of freelance reporters, Bellissimo received the Press Service Award given to an individual, company, retailer or news organization that goes above and beyond to support Long Island tennis. He was also the recipient of this award in 2015.
After serving 13 years as a freelance sports reporter for Herald Community Media, Bellissimo joined the company as its full-time sports editor in the summer of 2007.
In addition to providing the majority of weekly sports content for the large Nassau County based chain, which also publishes special sections previewing football, basketball, and multiple spring sports, Bellissimo oversees a staff of eight freelance sportswriters and a dozen freelance sports photographers.
Before joining the Herald on a full-time basis, he worked the National Football League beat for nine years and held the title of NFL Editor at College and Pro Football Newsweekly.
The Oct. 14 dinner was at the Sea Cliff Manor.
