The Freeport Memorial Library Inn B Tween room is now open. Specially created for students in grades 5 and 6, it is located just off the children’s room.
“The goal is to provide a space for those who are at the in-between age, not quite children and not quite teenagers,” said Cindy Soto, Head of Youth Services. “It’s a place for them to relax and socialize, and take part in programs tailored just for them.”
The Inn B Tween room will house the fifth and sixth grade fiction books popular with tweens. In addition, there are ten laptops, a smart TV, and games. A video game system will be added in the near future. Brightly spotted roll-away hassocks and small triangular tables can be used for study and reading, or stored to clear the space for a variety of activities.
“We’ve had the Tween group for a couple of years now,” Soto said. “Caroline G. Atkinson Intermediate School is for fifth and sixth grades only, and we started planning programming specifically for them many years back.”
“Looks pretty good!” said Daniel, a fifth grader at Atkinson, when he saw the room for the first time.
An East Setauket-based architecture firm, WFC Architects, developed the STEM-based concept for the room, and Renu Contracting of Copiague helped make this vision a reality. The project was done with the help of New York State construction aid.
The grand opening celebration will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festivities will include activities, games, snacks and prizes.
The Inn B Tween room will be open school days from 2-9 p.m. and during school vacation, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Future programs include “Werewolf” on Jan. 5 at 6 p.m., “Time for Trivia” on Fridays at 6 p.m. from Jan. 7 to Feb. 25, and “Let’s Chat about a Book” (the book is “Francie”) on Feb. 24 at 5:30 p.m.
