A Lindenhurst man was sentenced to up to 15 years in prison for a drunk driving crash in September 2025 which killed a man in Freeport.
Bryan Mizhirumbay, 24, pleaded guilty on Aug. 12 to charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, manslaughter in the second degree, assault in the second degree and aggravated driving while intoxicated before his sentencing on Nov. 2. He will be imprisoned for a minimum of seven years. Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly had recommended a maximum penalty of 18 years.
The victim, Craig White, 55, was an employee of AHRC Nassau, a nonprofit organization that assists children and adults who have autism or other mental disorders. The organization is headquartered in Brookville and has a chapter in Freeport, which is where White was driving home from after work.
"Craig White was a devoted father, friend and beloved member of the AHRC Nassau community," Donnelly stated in a press release after the sentencing. "His life was violently stolen because of the selfish and reckless decisions of this defendant."
At about 11:07 p.m. on Sept. 3, Mizhirumbay sped into the side of White's vehicle at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and South Long Beach Avenue, according to the Nassau County District Attorney's Office.
Mizhirumbay had been driving eastbound on Atlantic at speeds as high as 106 miles per hour seconds before the crash according to his vehicle's event data recorder while White was going northbound on South Long Beach. He had reduced his speed to about 90 miles an hour right before impact from intermittent braking. The speed limit was 35 miles per hour.
Mizhirumbay failed to stop for a red light at the intersection, leading both vehicles to crash into a fence on the property of Atlantic Nursery. His car subsequently caught on fire.
Donnelly detailed that the Mizhirumbay had been driving so fast that the driver's seat of Craig's car had been pushed into the passenger side of the vehicle when it was struck.
White was discovered unconscious and trapped in the driver's seat of his vehicle because of the impact of the crash. He was eventually taken out of the vehicle and was transported to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Mizhirumbay was transported to Nassau University Medical Center for treatment. Blood drawn from him at the hospital showed a blood alcohol level of 0.18 percent, more than twice the legal limit in New York.
Mizhirumbay was arrested by Nassau County Police Department's Homicide Squad months later on Jan. 20.
"That tragic moment created a ripple of grief and pain for all those who loved Craig, including his recently engaged daughter, who will now sadly walk down the aisle without her father by her side," Donnelly wrote. "We continue to keep Craig's family, friends and colleagues in our thoughts as this defendant begins serving his prison sentence."
