Village of Freeport addressing flood concerns ahead of weekend nor'easter storm

With a powerful nor’easter storm threatening to send hazardous rip currents and coastal flooding across Nassau County, the Village of Freeport and its Department of Public Works is working to monitor the storm conditions and keep residents as informed and safe as possible.

The storm is expected to begin taking effect through Friday afternoon, Sept. 25, with a coastal flood advisory in effect from 7 p.m. today through 9 a.m. on Friday. A coastal flood watch is in effect from Friday evening through Saturday morning.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman listed Freeport and other South Shore communities as areas where more severe weather effects are expected.

Freeport’s Mayor Robert T. Kennedy told the Herald that as of Thursday afternoon, minor flooding is predicted to hit low lying areas between 7:28 p.m. on Friday to 7:46 p.m. on Saturday.

“A more accurate prediction will be available after the low tide conditions are reviewed Friday afternoon at 1:28 p.m.,” Kennedy explained. “If the low tide is normal, we’re going to have less flooding. If the low tide is higher, we may have more flooding.”

The Department of Public Works will be monitoring the village's catch basins that help mitigate flooding in coastal neighborhoods.

All parking regulations and municipal lots will be suspended this weekend so that residents can park their vehicles in areas less likely to be effected by flooding. The Freeport Police Department, Freeport Fire Department and the village’s Department of Public Works will all be standing by for emergency response with adequate equipment to handle any storm-related crises that occur in the village.

On Sunday, Sept. 27, after the nor’easter,  the village will be hosting a free undercarriage car wash on South Bayview Avenue in front of the Freeport Fire Department’s Hose Company Number 3, so that if a vehicle gets stuck in salt water during the storm, it can be cleaned off to mitigate possible erosion.

Residents can expect to receive “robo calls” from the village providing further updates. The aforementioned village agencies can be contacted for any needed assistance in Freeport.
