As part of a collaborative experience between the school’s My Sisters Keeper and Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) programs, students from Roosevelt High School recently ventured on an academic trip to Washington D.C. During the trip, students were able to engage and learn about American history, strengthen leadership skills, explore the nation’s capital and build meaningful connections with one another.
Superintendent of Schools Shawn Wightman emphasized how proud he is of the students, stating, “Our students represented Roosevelt with professionalism, respect and pride in our nation’s capital.”
Throughout their time, students were exposed to several of the nation’s most important, historic and civil landmarks in Washington D.C. Beyond the classroom, the trip highlighted core values shared by both programs such as teamwork, responsibility and personal growth. The collaboration emphasized the District’s ongoing dedication to providing students with high-impact learning that goes beyond the classroom.
“Experiences like this not only broaden their horizons academically but also strengthen their confidence, character and sense of community,” Wightman added.
The field trip experience further expanded on the District’s launch of the New York State My Sister’s Keeper initiative, a program focused on supporting the academic, social and emotional development of girls and young women of color. The program, based on empowerment, leadership development and sisterhood, is committed to helping participants realize their full potential while fostering supportive peer networks and mentorship opportunities.
