With hurricane season on the horizon, Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton and New York state hosted a New York State Emergency Preparedness Workshop at the Glen Cove Senior Center on Monday, Aug. 28. Although the ambiance, the diverse businesses and the Downtown Sounds summer concert series already attract visitors from other parts of the North Shore, the city is asking community members what improvements they’d like to see in the downtown area. more

The Glen Cove City Council voted on Aug. 22 to ban the use of Airbnb for property rentals of less than 28 days. Council members also voted to ban the use of the Swimply phone app, which allows people to rent their pools by the hour. more

But what some take for granted — buying a backpack and school supplies for children — is too expensive for some families to provide. To help, the Nassau County Police Benevolent Association, Glen Cove Police Benevolent Association and Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton handed out free backpacks and school supplies at Glen Cove High School on Aug. 29, to ensure children have a better start at the beginning of the school year. more

Commuters on the Oyster Bay Branch of the Long Island Rail Road can expect a lot of changes come Sept. 5. But what the LIRR is touting as simplified trips will be expensive for commuters like Jeffry Brown. A CEO of a company in Manhattan, he is trying to convince his employees to return to work in person, which would require for most taking the Long Island Rail Road. Brown wrote in an email to the Herald that the changes will cost him an additional $120 a month for a municipal parking permit to use another station which he will need to do because of the LIRR’s changes. Although public policies should encourage people to take mass transit, the proposed changes will do the opposite for the Greenvale commuter. more
