The problem with the White House chart is that it fails to point out the fact that the wars in Vietnam and Afghanistan were total failures, and the Korean War is considered a draw and not any kind of victory. Many of us who were alive during the 20 years of strife in Vietnam still remember the photo of desperate evacuees reaching for a helicopter ladder as the U.S. Army left the capital. more

Handling water scarcity is critical, because we need clean water for drinking, food production and our overall survival. This summer, Nassau and Suffolk counties have seen state drought warnings due to below-normal precipitation. Last month, the Suffolk County Water Authority asked residents to stop watering their lawns, warning that its infrastructure was reaching maximum capacity under the current combination of drought and heat. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, Long Islanders use an average of 140 gallons of water a day per person, about 55 percent more than the national average. more
People move to Long Island for safe neighborhoods, excellent schools, strong local government and towns where neighbors still know one another. They want to raise their children in communities from Inwood to Montauk and from Long Beach to Glen Cove, not under one-size-fits-all rules written for Manhattan and Brooklyn. more
Summer has always been a special time in our township. It’s when parks come alive, beaches and pools fill with families, and neighbors have an opportunity to spend more time together. This year has been no exception. All across America’s largest township, residents have gathered to enjoy everything our town has to offer. more
