Rabbi Irwin Huberman, the longtime spiritual leader of Congregation Tifereth Israel in Glen Cove, died Aug. 1 in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, following a brief illness. He was 73.

Born June 30, 1953, in Montréal, Quebec, Huberman became rabbi of Congregation Tifereth Israel in 2007 and served the congregation for nearly two decades. Throughout his tenure, he was known for his commitment to his congregation and the broader Glen Cove community, where he provided spiritual leadership, guidance and support to generations of families.

Outside the synagogue, Huberman enjoyed music, sports and spending time with his family. He was a gifted guitarist and an avid fan of the New York Mets and the Montréal Canadiens.

Huberman is survived by his wife, Patte; his daughter, Jessica Sheva (Blair); his stepdaughter, Sarah (Paul); his stepson, John; his brother, Ron (Adeena); his niece, Jackie (Avidan); his nephews, Sean (Joanne) and Mitchell; and his grandchildren, Mason, Brooke and Clara.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 5, at Congregation Tifereth Israel, 40 Hill St., Glen Cove, followed by burial at New Montefiore Cemetery in West Babylon.

Shiva will be observed at Congregation Tifereth Israel on Wednesday, Aug. 5, from 7 to 9 p.m.; Thursday, Aug. 6, from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.; Friday, Aug. 7, from 2 to 4 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 8, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.; Sunday, Aug. 9, from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.; and Monday, Aug. 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The week of shiva concludes following the Tuesday morning service.

The family expressed gratitude to the critical care staff at Bayamón Medical Center and the Red Cross in Puerto Rico for their care and compassion. In lieu of bringing food to the shiva, donations may be made to Congregation Tifereth Israel’s Shiva Fund. The congregation also announced plans to sponsor a community blood drive in Huberman’s memory this fall.
