North Shore schools offer strong academics, athletics

The North Shore Central School District serves students living in Sea Cliff, Glen Head, Glenwood Landing, Old Brookville and parts of Greenvale and Roslyn Harbor in three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. Recognized for its academic performance, successful track and field program and award-winning music department, the district is well-regarded on Long Island.

Elementary schools

The three elementary schools in the North Shore Central School District serve students in kindergarten through fifth grade and all offer Universal Pre-K programs. They all provide robust academic programming with enrichment services. Foreign language and music education also begin at the elementary school level. Each elementary school has been highly ranked in New York in recent years.

District elementary schools include:

• Glenwood Landing School

• Sea Cliff School

• Glen Head School

What stands out:

• Academic performance: Students’ test scores at Glenwood Landing rank in the top five percent of schools in New York, with math and reading proficiency scores in the top one percent. Test scores of students at Sea Cliff and Glen Head rank in the top 10 percent of schools in the state with math and reading proficiency scores in the top five percent.

• State, national recognition: Glenwood Landing was ranked 48th in the top 50 schools in New York by “U.S. News and World Report” this year. Sea Cliff and Glen Head ranked 11th and 12th respectively in 2022. Glenwood Landing was named a U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon School in 2014.

• Well-rounded programming: All three elementary schools integrate foreign language curriculum in Spanish and Mandarin from kindergarten. Students take general music classes starting in kindergarten and are encouraged to begin playing an instrument in third grade. Enrichment services are offered

Middle School

Students at North Shore’s elementary schools come together in sixth grade at one middle school. The middle school offers a range of athletic and extracurricular programs as well as school-wide programs to support academic and social growth.

What stands out:

• Academic performance: North Shore Middle School was ranked fourth among middle schools on Long Island and 37th in New York by “U.S. News and World Report” this year. The school has a 90 percent proficiency rate in math and 85 percent in reading among students. Both exceed state averages by significant margins.

• Athletics and extracurriculars: Students in seventh and eighth grade are welcome to participate in competitive sports across the fall, winter i, winter ii and spring seasons. The middle school’s music education program helps strengthen skills students began to build in elementary school. Students are offered a variety of clubs to support them academically and socially.

• Civic and social programming: North Shore Middle School recognizes Unity Day and Red Ribbon week, educating students on bullying and substance abuse prevention. The school’s Civil Discourse Day brings the English and social studies departments together to work with students to engage in discussion  and sharing different perspectives

High School

North Shore Central School District has one high school where students continue to learn and develop academically, socially, athletically and musically while preparing for college and/or their careers.

What stands out:

• Academic strength: North Shore High School offers a variety of Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses along with Regents and honors level courses. Students receive individualized support from the guidance department in choosing which classes are best for them.

• Athletic and musical success: The high school girls track and field team has won six straight Nassau County Championships. With orchestra, band and choral programs that send students to prestigious festivals like All County and the Long Island Strings Festival each year, the high school contributes to the district’s receiving the Best Communities for Music Education Award.

• Preparation for graduation: The high school’s guidance counselors meet with students and families to support each student’s path after high school. North Shore has a 100 percent graduation rate.
