Howell Road students visit Crossroads Farm

owell Road Elementary School students took an educational excursion to Crossroads Farm. The collaboration between Crossroads Farm and Valley Stream District 13 aims to enrich students’ learning experiences by integrating hands-on agricultural activities into the classroom curriculum, fostering problem-solving skills, and promoting healthy eating habits.

One highlight of the partnership is that it provides students with a unique opportunity to engage in the “Sow-to-Grow” program. This innovative initiative introduces students to various aspects of farming, from seeding and transplanting to harvesting and salad making, while emphasizing the importance of nutrition and sustainable food practices.

“At Howell Road Elementary School, we are committed to providing our students with experiential learning opportunities that inspire curiosity and foster critical thinking skills,” said Frank Huplosky, principal of Howell Road Elementary School. “Our partnership with Crossroads Farm, supported by Valley Stream District 13, allows us to extend our classroom learning into the real world, empowering students to explore the connections between agriculture, nutrition, and environmental sustainability.”

During their visit to Crossroads Farm, students had the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities that promoted problem-solving and reasoning skills.

From planting seeds in the soil to harvesting fresh produce and preparing nutritious salads, students were actively engaged in every step of the agricultural process, gaining valuable insight into where their food comes from and the importance of making healthy choices.

Through this immersive learning experience, students develop a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of food systems and the role they can play in creating a more sustainable future.
