Town waives Sandy building permits for all 2016

The Town of Hempstead will continue waiving Building Department permit fees for residents who are continuing to repair and reconstruct their homes from damage caused by Superstorm Sandy Since the storm’s immediate aftermath this policy that has been in place. The fee waiver will be extended through the end of 2016 under a proposal being presented to the Hempstead Town Board at its July 5 meeting.

“Superstorm Sandy may be a distant memory for many in the Town of Hempstead, but for victims who lost their homes and property, the recovery process remains a part of their everyday lives,” stated Santino. “Waiving building permit fees through the end of the year is one way that we can continue assisting residents in need.”

In the Building Department, all town fees will continue to be waived through December 31, 2016 for Sandy-related structural repairs that conform to original dimensions and specifications, commonly referred to as “in-kind” repairs/replacement. Susie Trenkle-Pokalsky, spokesman for the Town, said this also applies to a variety of other permits, but only for the owner of record the day of the storm. Fees are waived for weekend construction. Work is allowed on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fees are also waived for house-lifting permits, repair permits, elevation permits and demolition permits among others.

Residents of incorporated villages should check requirements of their local villages.

“Having served as the 1st Assistant Chief of the Island Park Fire Department during Superstorm Sandy, I witnessed firsthand the devastation affecting local communities,” said Councilman D’Esposito.
