Michael Berube was a Long Beach lifeguard and a varsity wrestler at Long Beach High School, and was widely known by his family and friends to be one of the first to turn strangers into friends with his open, inviting charm. When Berube died by suicide in 2023, his memory and attitude inspired those who knew him to continue his legacy, to ensure that others feel included and safe.

Long Beach High School hosted its annual Research Symposium on June 1, showcasing its research program. The event focused on student research, with posterboards displayed in the school’s upper commons area. This year, 26 students in grades eight through 12 created work that ranged from global warming’s influence on hurricane landfall to potential improvements in administering intravenous lines in pediatric patients.

Dozens of participants walked out of Buoy Bar in Point Lookout after the 2026 Roper Walk, where everyone in attendance comes dressed as the iconic TV personality Helen Roper from the 1970s sitcom "Three's Company" — with her iconic caftan dresses and bright red-haired wigs. Nicole Koenig, a Point Lookout resident and recent breast cancer survivor, arranged the combination dress-up/bar crawl as a fundraiser for Hewlett House, which provides support for people going through cancer treatments.

Summer brings an excitement for both community members and visitors to Long Beach. But when beaches begin filling up in June and temperatures rise, so does the need at the Long Beach Soup Kitchen. As part of National Hunger Awareness Month, observed annually in June, the soup kitchen is asking the community for donations to help meet that increased need.

The Long Beach City Council voted to pierce the statewide tax cap by 1.5 percent during a special city council meeting held the morning of May 29. The tax increase connects to the planned 2027 budget, with anticipated expenses increasing nearly $5.5 million, or roughly 5 percent. The rising tax will result in an average increase of $229 per household per year.
