Learn diabetes self-management
Rachel Ferdinand, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator who serves as the director of the diabetes education at Long Beach Medical Center, will conduct an educational program for anyone with diabetes, whether they are newly diagnosed or have had diabetes for years. The last class is on April 15 at 12 p.m. at LBMC, at 455 E. Bay Drive. For information call 897-4354.
Interfaith program
Temple Emanu-El of Long Beach, at 455 Neptune Blvd., will host an interfaith meeting at 4 p.m. on April 11. For information call 431-9659.

Diabetes awareness walk
The Long Beach Leos, the youth branch of the Lions Club, will hold their first annual Strides Walk for Diabetes Awareness on April 18. Registration starts at 10 a.m. on the Long Beach boardwalk at Riverside Boulevard. For pre-registration and Info contact Nicole at Nper1023@gmail.com.
Fashion show
The Long Beach Chamber of Commerce will host a fashion show at Monterey restaurant, at 20 W. Park Ave. in Long Beach, at 6 p.m. on April 29. Clothing stores interested in displaying their wares and those interested in modeling, call Warren Vegh at 448-2959.
West End Arts meeting
West End Arts will hold their monthly meeting at the Magnolia Community Center on Magnolia Boulevard at 7 p.m. on April 12. Guest speaker Lisa Cangemi will give a talk "The Connecting Paths Between Graphic Design and Other Art Mediums."
Blood drive at City Hall
The City of Long Beach Fire Department and Police Department have joined hands to hold a blood drive at City Hall from 1 to 5:30 p.m. on April 13. To schedule an appointment call Cameron Martin at 431-1000 ext. 7216 or stop by the public relations office at City Hall. 
Learn to cope
The declining economy, high unemployment and diminished savings has many people experiencing anxiety or depression for the first time in their lives. It’s understandable given that we’re living in a recession that has lasted more than a year and shows limited signs of improvement. To help individuals understand the emotional impact of these changes and learn effective coping strategies and treatments, Long Beach Medical Center is offering free, confidential anxiety and depression screenings every Wednesday from 2 to 3 p.m. For information call 897-1270. 
Torah classes
Temple Beth-El, at 570 W. Walnut St. in Long Beach, is offering free Torah classes on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. in the smorgasbord room. For information call 432-1678.
Artists wanted for fine arts show
The City of Long Beach is preparing for its 16th annual Fine Arts Show, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday June 12 and13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Kennedy Plaza in front of City Hall. The art committee invites artists to present and sell their works, including oils, acrylics, watercolor, pastel, mixed media, drawings, prints, sculpture and photography. Crafts and jewelry will not be accepted. A single space (10x15) costs $150 for the two-day event. Call 431-1000.
Landmark dinner
The Long Beach Island Landmarks Association will host a recognition dinner at Matteo’s, at 777 West Beech St., from 5 to 9 p.m. on April 25. Honorees are City Manager Charles Theofan, Mary Giambalvo, Dr. Lowell Taubman and Richard Ross. The program includes dinner with wine, dessert, entertainment and guest speakers. The cost is $65. Museum trip
The Avanti Society will host a trip to the Holocaust Museum in Glen Cove on June 13. The fee for the bus, tour and lunch is $35. For information and seats call 889-5086.

Anthony DiBetta concert
The Avanti Society presents Anthony DiBetta, who will entertain with old songs and Italian favorites at the Long Beach Public Library on Apr. 11 at 2 p.m.
Sow with Kenneth King
Come join fellow sewers at an Embellishment and Trims Workshop with Kenneth King from 12 to 4 p.m. on April 24. King is a New York-based haute couturier who specializes in evening wear. His work has appeared in music videos, television commercials and on the red carpet at the Oscars. The class is $45 per person. You will receive a list for materials when you register. Advanced knitting
Advanced knitters can take their skills to the next level with high fashion knitter. Students will learn intricate stitches and make stylish cable bags, one with bamboo handles, at 1 p.m. on April 8.
Crochet a shawl-poncho
Experienced crocheters can learn how to make a fashionable shawl-poncho with Robin Lisa on April 13, 20 and 27 at 1:30 p.m. Seniors will also learn to crochet beautiful flowers.
Trusts — Do you need one?
The Long Beach Advisory Board for Seniors is proud to announce the first in a series of free legal seminars for seniors. Attorney Kim Christian, from Vincent J. Russo & Associates, will make an informative presentation at 1 p.m. on April 14.
Tai chi classes
Seniors can learn Tai Chi Chuan with teacher Elizabeth Connors and experience the ancient Chinese exercise of movements beautifully linked together in a series of rhythmic steps at 11 a.m. on April 9, 16 and 23.
Intro to line dancing
Patient instructor Lori Shapiro will teach seniors some basic line dance steps at a slow pace. Classes are scheduled for Mondays April 12 and 19 from 9 to 10 a.m.
Kitchen herb container gardening
Seniors can learn how to plant their own kitchen herb garden in this spring gardening workshop lead by horticultural therapist Mary Quinn at 9:30 a.m. on April 29.
Basic drawing
Long Beach seniors can improve their drawing skills with supportive instructor Marilyn Kestin on at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesdays in April.

Start saving money now! Hot off the presses is the Senior Friendly Establishments List for 2010, prepared by the Long Beach Advisory Board for Seniors. It includes close to 40 local businesses that offer discounts to seniors. Pick up a copy at the 2nd floor main office at the senior center.

Exercise classes
The Rec is offering two adult courses this spring, a yoga/pilates class and a boot camp will be held in the Teen Center (above the Ice Arena) on weekday evenings and weekend mornings. Registration is at the Rec’s swimming pool, at Magnolia Boulevard and West Bay Drive. The fee is $50 for Long Beach residents; $100 for non-residents.
Kids fitness clubs
The Rec is holding registration for a fitness club, an exercise program for children 7 to 13. The starting date for girls is April 28 and will meet Wednesdays and Fridays at 5 p.m.; the boy’s club begins April 27 and meets Tuesday and Fridays at 5 p.m. The program will continue for eight weeks until June.
