In a statement to families, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Gallagher said that she was notified on Thursday of a staff member from the NIKE Alternative High School who tested positive for the coronavirus.

The individual has since recovered and has not been at the school since March 6.

Gallagher said she was not notified about the positive test from the Nassau County Department of Health, but rather from the staff member. The 14-day incubation period will be over tomorrow.

In addition, she said, several parents of students have alerted the district that they are being tested for the virus. The district is awaiting results, but Gallagher said it is likely there will be “additional cases in our community.”

Gallagher also urged the need to maintain social distancing during the pandemic.

“This is not a time for parties, playdates, or team sports,” Gallagher said. “ I know teenagers especially think that they are invincible (I am a mother to one!), but it is our job as parents to help them to understand that their actions may mean that other, more vulnerable people get sick.”
