The board of zoning appeals will meet at City Hall on Aug. 27 at 6 p.m. and have a hearing on the future of the former Hebrew Academy Long Beach building. The property, 530 West Broadway, was vacated in March 2017 after the school moved to their renovated campus in Woodmere.
A proposal was presented for the property nearly a decade ago by developer 73rd Meridian Partners LLC.
It includes the demolition and removal of the HALB property and would be replaced by a 106-unit multifamily residential facility, with two eight-story buildings bordering a central building. Other additions include a 162-space ground level parking garage and a 51-space mezzanine parking.
In the past year, The Bioswale Club has taken the initiative to revive the dilapidated building. This past spring, the club, in collaboration with the Long Beach Arts Council, painted murals on the building. In June, the club constructed a Whale monument out of plastic bags, bottles, and bottle caps removed from the beach during cleanups.
