The parkway ride toward Lido Boulevard will be slow-going in upcoming months as the New York State Department of Transportation has begun a $16 million bridge repair project on sections of Loop Parkway and Meadowbrook Parkway.
The renovations began late Tuesday night and are expected to continue for several months. On Loop Parkway, westbound traffic will be temporarily shifted to the eastbound side of the bridge above Reynolds Channel until the end of the year. One lane of traffic in each direction will remain open. On Meadowbrook Parkway, the left lane, in each direction, will be closed at both Fundy Channel and False Channel. Construction on the Meadowbrook is expected to last through the end of November.
The speed limit surrounding each of the three construction zones will be reduced from 55 mph to 45 mph for the safety of workers and travelers. Road crews will operate during the day and night performing maintenance on the bridge decks, replacing bridge joints to improve structural strength, installing new railings to enhance motorist safety and adding navigation lighting to improve visibility for maritime traffic.
“We have a lot of work to do across the entire state this year,” New York State DOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez wrote in a news release. “Our crews will be out there in force, improving hundreds of miles of roads this year alone on Long Island — enhancing safety across every region of the Empire State.”
