Nursing Home Warriors pop-up in Long Beach

A pop-up clothing shop filled the lobby of Beach Terrace Care Center on Oct. 4 as the Nursing Home Warriors, a Hicksville-based nonprofit providing free clothing to nursing home residents. Nearly a dozen volunteers arranged tables and clothing racks to look similar to a department store — complete with separate men’s and women’s sections — and helped residents shop for outfits.

Danielle Lieblein, who works as a registered dietitian in nursing homes, was inspired to start the charity roughly three years ago when she and her son, Jack, now 22, brought his outgrown, gently used clothing to a local nursing home and distributed it to residents in need. The residents’ enthusiastic reaction inspired the pair to recruit volunteers and sponsors to raise money for more clothing drop-offs throughout the area. The organization has held roughly 20 pop-ups in 2026 and has distributed more than 18,000 pieces of clothing in total.

“I grew up going nursing homes with her,” Jack Lieblein said of his mother. “And soup kitchens on Thanksgiving and Christmas. We were helping out in nursing homes and volunteering with the residents.”

Lieblein explained that Nursing Home Warriors delivers more than just new threads. They actively support nursing home residents in Nassau and Suffolk. “When a family member goes on vacation and they can’t visit their loved ones, they can call us,” Lieblein said, “And we’ll go in and sit with their loved ones. We’ll just play cards with them, talk to them, give them coffee, whatever it is.” Nursing Home Warriors also participates in resident advocacy, speaking to staff administrators when asked. In the coming year, the group is looking to expand with new location chapters and branches, increasing its charitable reach.

“I’m very happy. It’s perfect,” said Jane Woods, 73, a Beach Terrace resident originally from Brooklyn, after collecting pants and a top from the clothing shop. “I just want to say, God bless all of you. Thank you very much.”
