See how much more crowded the Long Beach Wall of Fame became

The Long Beach High School Wall of Fame added five new inductees this past Saturday. The memorable event started with the Board of Education President, Dennis Ryan, welcoming the inductees, their family, friends and attendees.

“This event is one of the board’s favorite events,” Ryan said,

In addition to Ryan, Long Beach School Superintendent, Dr. Jennifer Gallagher and Long Beach High School Principal Jeffrey Meyers greeted everyone as well.

Long Beach High School student-athlete, Zoe Moller, spoke on what the Wall of Fame means to her as a current student-athlete. Zoe, a member of the varsity girls volleyball team, spoke beautifully representing both the student body and the athletic department.

Following, it was time for the inductees to be introduced.

Barbara Dubow, class of 1963, her family spoke about Barbara’s commitment to the Long Beach community and the importance of community service Barbara has passed on to her family.

Martin “Coach Jake” Jacobson, class of 1963, was introduced by fellow graduating classmate and Wall of Fame member, Howard Apple. Apple spoke about how “Coach Jake” impacted thousands of youngsters while winning multiple state championships and coach of the year awards. Coach Jake stated of all the places he has been in his life, Long Beach is still the place he calls home.

Deborah Polcer Capodiferro, class of 1980, was introduced by Coach Leo Palacio. Palacio remarked that as a student in the high school he saw Debby’s athletic ability saying it was clear she was the best athlete in the school. Debby shared that her coaches at Long Beach High School helped her reach her dream to play collegiate basketball. Debby said her high school experience helped motivate her to “pay it forward” as she taught and mentored students as a high school health teacher in the Long Beach School District for three decades.

Beverly Rivera Monaghan, class of 2003, was introduced by one of her volleyball coaches, Karen Bloom. Bloom noted that Beverly was the first great Long Beach girls volleyball player that helped start the winning tradition the varsity girls volleyball program has to this day. Beverly remarked on the importance various professionals in the middle and high school helped aid her to accomplish her dreams.

The last person inducted was Edgar J. Scherick, class of 1941. Eric Feldman spoke about his cousin explaining the multiple accomplishments Edgar had in his career and the importance he has had on the landscape of television and movies.

Arnold Epstein, Long Beach High School director of health, physical education and athletics, concluded the ceremony by congratulating the inductees and remarked how the spirit each of the Wall of Fame inductees is still alive and well in the current high school student body.
