Second graders at Marion Street Elementary School in the Lynbrook School District celebrated Be the Change Day on Oct. 7 by exploring how small acts of kindness can make a difference in their school, community and beyond.
Students in Amy Brennan’s second grade class worked together to write, illustrate and assemble a book highlighting ways they can make a positive impact on the world around them. Their ideas included helping friends, spreading kindness and making others smile.
The class also welcomed a special visit from Lynbrook Superintendent Dr. Paul Lynch, who listened as students read their book aloud and shared the lessons they learned through the project.
Be the Change Day is observed in honor of Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday and encourages students to reflect on the importance of peace, kindness and service to others.
As part of the lesson, Brennan’s students learned about Gandhi and drew inspiration from the quote attributed to him, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
Through the activity, students demonstrated how everyday actions, no matter how small, can help create a more caring and supportive community.
