A private company controlled by a multi-billion-dollar Canadian hedge fund is seeking approval to build a liquefied natural gas station in the Atlantic Ocean 17 nautical miles southeast of Jones Beach. If built, a pipeline extending from the station would have to hook up to an existing pipeline 2.2 miles south of Atlantic Beach.

Republicans in the Nassau County Legislature modified their proposed redistricting map yesterday, backing off a plan to place a sliver of Merrick, including the home of Democratic Legislator Dave Denenberg, into the neighboring district of Legislator Joseph Scannell, a Democrat from Baldwin. The plan would have removed one of the two incumbents from the Legislature.

A special election to replace Nassau County Legislator Peter Schmitt will be held on Election Day, Nov. 6. Schmitt, the Legislature’s majority leader and presiding officer, who represented the 12th District since 1995, died suddenly of a heart attack on Oct. 3. He was 62.

In a 3-2 decision last Thursday, New York State Appellate Division judges upheld new boundaries drawn by Nassau Republican lawmakers for the county’s 19 legislative districts. If the state Court of Appeals rules in favor of the Republican plan on Aug. 24, the GOP’s legislative map will reshape a number of districts, including those covering the Five Towns, Elmont, Baldwin and Merrick-Bellmore.
