Malverne photography student in the spotlight

Malverne High School senior and photography student Rosemary Vargas, left, recently spent a weekend in New York City shooting environmental portraits. With advisement from her photography teacher, Christine Caruso, right, Vargas submitted her print — “With Love and Kisses,” featuring her good friend, Candice Sabdul — which will be showcased at the Photographic Society of America’s (PSA) 74th Annual Conference in California this September.

The Photographic Federation of Long Island (PFLI) consists of 20 camera clubs within the five boroughs of New York City and holds membership in the PSA, which each year sponsors a Youth Showcase. The PSA is a nationwide organization that also includes members from many other countries. The prints and digital entries from the PFLI photo contest were sent to the PSA for its 2012 showcase. Vargas’s work was selected out of 402 print entries from 86 high schools.
