Seaford controlled both sides of the ball in Saturday’s key Conference IV football showdown against Malverne to stay in command of one of the top seeds for the upcoming Conference IV playoffs.
The Vikings won their third game in a row with a 28-0 victory over the Mules on a cloudy fall afternoon at Ray Buckley Field of Dreams.
The dominant Homecoming performance put Seaford (4-2) in strong position with two regular season games remaining as the Vikings gear up for the postseason and a chance to repeat as county champions. The Mules are also 4-2.
“We're back healthy now after being fairly banged up in the first couple games and we pretty much have all our guys back now,” Seaford third-year year coach Mike McHugh said. “This is really the first game since the beginning of the year we had everyone.”
The Vikings took control early against Malverne with junior quarterback Finn Curry finding senior running back Mikey Kofod for a 9-yard first-quarter touchdown pass to make it 7-0 following a Vincent Catalfomo extra point.
Senior wide receiver Jackson Pignataro extended the lead with a six-year touchdown reception from Curry to make it 14-0 after the first quarter.
Kofod hauled in another 9-yard touchdown catch from Curry to make it 21-0 Seaford at halftime. The versatile Kofod then capped off his big offensive day with a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
“When Michael Calvacca went down with a broken collarbone he stepped up without any hesitation,” McHugh said of Kofod who had five receptions for 52 yards and 56 yards rushing to go along with his three total touchdowns. “He stepped right into the starting role.”
Curry also had a big all-around day going 15 for 23 with 181 yards passing and three touchdowns. The starting signal caller, who leads Nassau County in passing yards, also rushed for 46 yards on 17 attempts.
Nick Paluzzi was another big receiving target of Curry with the senior wide receiver recording four catches for 62 yards. Brock Conway, Carmine Pandolfino and Pignataro all had two catches.
The Vikings’ defense recorded its second shutout in three weeks with Brady Falk and Anthony Foglia both recording a sack apiece. McHugh credited Conway with leading the defensive effort at middle linebacker and recording some key tackles.
“The kid just has great instincts and flows to the ball,” McHugh said of Conway. “He’s a game changer.”
Malverne saw its three-game winning streak snapped with its offense kept out of the end zone just eight days after a dominant 34-6 win at Island Trees.
Senior quarterback Isaiah Smith, who rushed for 167 yards and three touchdowns in the Locust Valley win, was limited to 31 yards against Seaford. Jamir Houston finished the day 35 rushing yards on 10 attempts.
“They had a good defensive strategy upfront and their defensive line played very well,” longtime Malverne head coach Kito Lockwood said. “We couldn’t get any movement up front with our offensive line.”
Seaford visits 5-1 Floral Park next. The Mules host 5-1 North Shore.
