West Hempstead teen recognized for stellar artwork

West Hempstead High School senior Godlee Sainvilus was recently selected for the Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum exhibit. As the only juried exhibition on Long Island, Long Island’s Best offers high school students the unique opportunity to show their work in a museum.

Each year, students in grades 9-12 are invited to create a work of art inspired by a piece shown in the museum. Hundreds of works of art are submitted from schools across Nassau and Suffolk and about 80 are chosen for display in the exhibition.

Sainvilus created a mixed-media piece through the use of photography and paint. At the moment, photography is her favorite vehicle for her art.

“There is such a gratification in taking the perfect photo,” Sainvilus said in a news release. “My favorite things to photograph are nature, especially the moon, but I’m also hoping to photograph more people in the future.”

Sainvilus and her work will be recognized in a virtual ceremony on May 1 and the exhibition is open for viewing from April 17-May 23.
