I ran for 45 minutes over the seashell-coated paths and up and down the steep hills of Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick last Saturday, and I didn’t meet a soul, which was surprising and strange, even a little eerie.

When Hurricane Sandy struck on Oct. 29, it severely damaged a number of Town of Hempstead facilities in the Bellmore-Merrick area. Repair work is under way, but it could be some time before they are up and running again. Particularly hard hit were the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve, the Sanitation Department and the Merrick Senior Center.

A group of Herald Community Newspapers executives, editors, reporters and interns took a kayak tour on Nassau County’s wild side last Thursday, launching from the Town of Hempstead’s Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick. Among those on the tour was Stuart Richner, who co-owns Richner Communications Inc., the Heralds’ parent company.

Lately, students in one of Jennifer Meschkow’s sixth-grade classes at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick, co-taught by Susan Holland, have been checking clothing labels to see the countries where the apparel was manufactured. Then the students use the Internet to look up working conditions in the countries, with a focus on whether child-labor laws are abused.
