When Mepham High School sophomore Sabrina Mastrangelo saw a cruel post online about one of her older classmates, she said she was disgusted and vowed to make her peers aware of the dangers of cyber-bullying. With that platform in mind, she entered the Miss Long Island Teen competition, hoping to raise awareness about her cause.

On a recent hot summer evening, Mepham alumni joined together in the school cafeteria for a class reunion of sorts – over 60 years in the making.
Former Mepham High School students, some of whom graduated as early as 1941, met up for the Scuttlebutt magazine’s “mailing party.” Led by editor Clare Eastwood Worthing, class of ’46, and her husband, Jerry Worthing, the production manager and a ’41 graduate, the team labeled and bundled the magazines for mailing to more than 2,000 members.

Much was the same about this year’s Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District graduation ceremonies on Sunday. Seniors came attired in their caps and gowns –– blue robes for Calhoun, green for Kennedy and red for Mepham. Excited parents showered their now adult children with flowers and balloons, and snapped hundreds of photos.
