As predicted, a powerful winter storm rolled into the greater metropolitan area after midnight on Thursday morning, bringing with it snow, frigid temperatures and heavy winds. Snowfall projections increased throughout the afternoon and evening on Wednesday, and by 9 a.m. on Thursday, a blizzard warning had been issued in Nassau County.

Due to the incoming storm that could blanket the South Shore in more than a foot of snow, all schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School, Bellmore and North Bellmore, North Merrick and Merrick Union Free School Districts are closed, and all after school activities cancelled for Feb. 9.

Town of Hempstead Supervisor Anthony J. Santino stood at the podium next to a crate of fresh beets. The next time it snows on Long Island, the Town of Hempstead Sanitation Department will use the juice of these vegetables in a brine solution to de-ice the roads, he announced.
