At Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve, it’s easy to forget you’re in suburban south Merrick. While gazing at goats grazing in a pasture beside a tumbledown shed, trails curving out of view up a hillside, rushes hiding a stream, or vistas of bays and the beach, the sounds of passing cars or neighbors’ lawnmowers fall away into silence.

Austin Hecker and his mom, Heidi Hecker, of Merrick, were watching TV one day when they saw American speed skater and Olympic champion Apolo Ohno making a guest appearance on the talk show “The Doctors.” Ohno was discussing his experience with exercise induced bronchospasm, also known as exercise induced asthma, a medical condition characterized by tightening of breathing airways due to extra production of mucus during exercise.

At 6:30 a.m. on a recent Monday, I was running hard when I had to stop abruptly at the corner of Merrick Avenue and Merrick Road in Merrick, my hometown. The stoplight had suddenly changed, and the traffic started moving in front of me. I hadn’t noticed that the light had changed. I was in something of a runner’s trance.
